- Seeing Soundscapes: Audio-Visual Generation and Separation from Soundscapes Using Audio-Visual Separator Recent audio-visual generative models have made substantial progress in generating images from audio. However, existing approaches focus on generating images from single-class audio and fail to generate images from mixed audio. To address this, we propose an Audio-Visual Generation and Separation model (AV-GAS) for generating images from soundscapes (mixed audio containing multiple classes). Our contribution is threefold: First, we propose a new challenge in the audio-visual generation task, which is to generate an image given a multi-class audio input, and we propose a method that solves this task using an audio-visual separator. Second, we introduce a new audio-visual separation task, which involves generating separate images for each class present in a mixed audio input. Lastly, we propose new evaluation metrics for the audio-visual generation task: Class Representation Score (CRS) and a modified R@K. Our model is trained and evaluated on the VGGSound dataset. We show that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art, achieving 7% higher CRS and 4% higher R@2* in generating plausible images with mixed audio. 2 authors · Apr 25, 2025
- Clotho-AQA: A Crowdsourced Dataset for Audio Question Answering Audio question answering (AQA) is a multimodal translation task where a system analyzes an audio signal and a natural language question, to generate a desirable natural language answer. In this paper, we introduce Clotho-AQA, a dataset for Audio question answering consisting of 1991 audio files each between 15 to 30 seconds in duration selected from the Clotho dataset. For each audio file, we collect six different questions and corresponding answers by crowdsourcing using Amazon Mechanical Turk. The questions and answers are produced by different annotators. Out of the six questions for each audio, two questions each are designed to have 'yes' and 'no' as answers, while the remaining two questions have other single-word answers. For each question, we collect answers from three different annotators. We also present two baseline experiments to describe the usage of our dataset for the AQA task - an LSTM-based multimodal binary classifier for 'yes' or 'no' type answers and an LSTM-based multimodal multi-class classifier for 828 single-word answers. The binary classifier achieved an accuracy of 62.7% and the multi-class classifier achieved a top-1 accuracy of 54.2% and a top-5 accuracy of 93.7%. - On the Utility of Speech and Audio Foundation Models for Marmoset Call Analysis Marmoset monkeys encode vital information in their calls and serve as a surrogate model for neuro-biologists to understand the evolutionary origins of human vocal communication. Traditionally analyzed with signal processing-based features, recent approaches have utilized self-supervised models pre-trained on human speech for feature extraction, capitalizing on their ability to learn a signal's intrinsic structure independently of its acoustic domain. However, the utility of such foundation models remains unclear for marmoset call analysis in terms of multi-class classification, bandwidth, and pre-training domain. This study assesses feature representations derived from speech and general audio domains, across pre-training bandwidths of 4, 8, and 16 kHz for marmoset call-type and caller classification tasks. Results show that models with higher bandwidth improve performance, and pre-training on speech or general audio yields comparable results, improving over a spectral baseline. 2 authors · Jul 23, 2024
- Violence Detection in Videos In the recent years, there has been a tremendous increase in the amount of video content uploaded to social networking and video sharing websites like Facebook and Youtube. As of result of this, the risk of children getting exposed to adult and violent content on the web also increased. To address this issue, an approach to automatically detect violent content in videos is proposed in this work. Here, a novel attempt is made also to detect the category of violence present in a video. A system which can automatically detect violence from both Hollywood movies and videos from the web is extremely useful not only in parental control but also for applications related to movie ratings, video surveillance, genre classification and so on. Here, both audio and visual features are used to detect violence. MFCC features are used as audio cues. Blood, Motion, and SentiBank features are used as visual cues. Binary SVM classifiers are trained on each of these features to detect violence. Late fusion using a weighted sum of classification scores is performed to get final classification scores for each of the violence class target by the system. To determine optimal weights for each of the violence classes an approach based on grid search is employed. Publicly available datasets, mainly Violent Scene Detection (VSD), are used for classifier training, weight calculation, and testing. The performance of the system is evaluated on two classification tasks, Multi-Class classification, and Binary Classification. - Multi-Resolution Audio-Visual Feature Fusion for Temporal Action Localization Temporal Action Localization (TAL) aims to identify actions' start, end, and class labels in untrimmed videos. While recent advancements using transformer networks and Feature Pyramid Networks (FPN) have enhanced visual feature recognition in TAL tasks, less progress has been made in the integration of audio features into such frameworks. This paper introduces the Multi-Resolution Audio-Visual Feature Fusion (MRAV-FF), an innovative method to merge audio-visual data across different temporal resolutions. Central to our approach is a hierarchical gated cross-attention mechanism, which discerningly weighs the importance of audio information at diverse temporal scales. Such a technique not only refines the precision of regression boundaries but also bolsters classification confidence. Importantly, MRAV-FF is versatile, making it compatible with existing FPN TAL architectures and offering a significant enhancement in performance when audio data is available. 3 authors · Oct 5, 2023
- Early Joint Learning of Emotion Information Makes MultiModal Model Understand You Better In this paper, we present our solutions for emotion recognition in the sub-challenges of Multimodal Emotion Recognition Challenge (MER2024). To mitigate the modal competition issue between audio and text, we adopt an early fusion strategy based on a large language model, where joint training of audio and text is conducted initially. And the joint Audio-Text modal feature will be late-fused with other unimodal features. In order to solve the problems of data insufficiency and class imbalance, We use multiple turns of multi-model voting for data mining. Moreover, to enhance the quality of audio features, we employ speech source separation to preprocess audios. - Towards Auditing Large Language Models: Improving Text-based Stereotype Detection Large Language Models (LLM) have made significant advances in the recent past becoming more mainstream in Artificial Intelligence (AI) enabled human-facing applications. However, LLMs often generate stereotypical output inherited from historical data, amplifying societal biases and raising ethical concerns. This work introduces i) the Multi-Grain Stereotype Dataset, which includes 52,751 instances of gender, race, profession and religion stereotypic text and ii) a novel stereotype classifier for English text. We design several experiments to rigorously test the proposed model trained on the novel dataset. Our experiments show that training the model in a multi-class setting can outperform the one-vs-all binary counterpart. Consistent feature importance signals from different eXplainable AI tools demonstrate that the new model exploits relevant text features. We utilise the newly created model to assess the stereotypic behaviour of the popular GPT family of models and observe the reduction of bias over time. In summary, our work establishes a robust and practical framework for auditing and evaluating the stereotypic bias in LLM. 3 authors · Nov 23, 2023
